Decoding the Corona Virus



You must have been hearing a lot about Corona Virus these days.


Here is the basic you should know.


What is CoronaVirus?


CoronaViruses are a large family of viruses, capable of causing respiratory infections ranging from common cold and cough to life-threatening breathing problems.The viruses look like a crown under a microscope and that's why the name (corona in latin means crown).


Why is it in so much news these days?


A new corona virus strain (never known before) has surfaced and spread across 168 countries in a less than just three months of its first identification in Dec 2019 in Wuhan, China. Over 8500 people have lost lives and 0.2 million people stand infected. The number is increasing rapidly with every passing day.


Should you take precautions?


Yes, the disease is fast spreading. Increasing number of people, irrespective of the age-group and socio-economic background they belong to, are getting infected. There is a possibility that you may too.


What you can do?


Disease has been reported to be spreading through human-to-human transmission. Avoid coming in contact with infected people. Avoid shaking hands and hugging as a matter of greeting. Maintain a distance of at least one-two meter while talking to a person with cough, fever and breathing problem. Avoid going to public places and social gatherings.


What more can be done?


Maintain hygiene. Objects around you might be contaminated and your hands might get infected after touching them. Wash your hands properly with soap and water or use alcohol-based-hand sanitizer at regular intervals. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.
