Mumps Outbreak Sweeping Through Northern Indian State: Learn About Symptoms and Treatment

Mumps is rapidly spreading across various districts, affecting 35 children aged 5-10 in Hamirpur town, according to Hamirpur CMO Dr RK Agnihotri. Stressing the infectious nature of the disease, Dr Agnihotri cautioned against self-medication and urged prompt medical consultation upon symptom onset. Similar cases were reported in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana last December.

Mumps, caused by the mumps virus in the Paramyxovirus family, targets salivary glands, notably the parotid glands, causing swelling. It can also affect organs like the pancreas, testes, ovaries, and CNS.

Mumps symptoms encompass fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and swelling of salivary glands, often causing a "chipmunk cheek" appearance. Highly contagious, it spreads via respiratory droplets and surface contact.

No specific antiviral treatment exists for mumps. Focus on symptom relief and complication prevention includes rest, hydration, pain relievers, and cold or warm compresses.
