Diwali Burn: How to Handle?

Be careful while burning or being around crackers. In the event of any burn, do the following: 1. Remove any visible foreign object (like clothes, watch, belt, jewellery and so on) from over the affected area. 2. Place the affected area under running water or immerse it in cool water for 10-15 minutes. Do not apply ice. It can lower body temperature and cause further pain and damage. 3. Do not break blisters (should there be any). 4. Do not apply toothpaste, butter, oil or lotions (especially if they contain fragrance). It can cause infection. Apply specifically designed burn creams (keep it handy), antiseptic cream or petroleum-based ointment if you have to. 5. Cover the affected area with gauze (wrap it losely). 6. Pop in any over-the-counter pain killer should the pain be unbearable. 7. See a doctor if the burn and / or pain is excessive and doesn’t subside in an hour or so. We wish you happy and safe Diwali.
